The 2024 Australasian Railway Association (ARA) AusRAIL conference on the Gold Coast was buzzing with conversation about two of the rail industry’s most pressing challenges: the race to achieve net zero emissions and skilled labour shortages.
These key topics dominated discussions among industry leaders and PRM was right there in the thick of it, engaging with clients, peers and thought leaders about how the sector can tackle these challenges.
For PRM’s Managing Director Chris Prior and Business Manager Damien Casson, the conference was a chance to dive into meaningful conversations about the future of rail.
The push towards sustainability, particularly the industry’s journey to net-zero rail by 2030, was a major talking point. A panel discussion at the Swedish Rail Breakfast Seminar, attended by over 100 industry professionals, delved into how the next five years will be crucial in navigating the shift to greener rail practices.
The panel stressed the urgency of the challenge, but also focused on the opportunities that could be unlocked if the sector came together to accelerate change.
“As a rail maintenance and construction partner, we’re actively reducing our emissions through solar powered facilities and low-emissions equipment. But we’re constantly exploring new ways to lower our environmental footprint even further.”
The labour shortage, another major issue, was a hot topic at the event. CEOs from major mining companies and senior rail executives shared their concerns about the scarcity of skilled workers in the sector, and how this shortage is slowing progress on some key projects. With the demand for rail services set to grow, the need for a robust workforce is more critical than ever.
Damien Casson noted that PRM’s own efforts to attract and retain talent were vitally important. “We’re hearing the same challenges from all corners of the industry. At PRM, we’re focused on building a workplace that people want to stay in — one that offers exciting projects, career growth and a culture of support. Attracting and keeping good people is essential to driving success in the rail sector.”
PRM’s ongoing expansion in the rail sector was another highlight of the conference. As the company continues to build its presence, there was significant interest in some of the advanced technologies PRM has deployed, including the Narrow Head Flashbutt Welder and Excavator Undercutting Methodology. Both solutions promise to make rail operations more efficient and cost-effective, and they sparked plenty of curiosity among conference attendees.

In addition to the golf day – which was a fantastic and enjoyable network opportunity at the conference – PRM proudly participated in the Women in Rail event, where we reaffirmed our commitment to enriching the rail industry by creating opportunities for underrepresented groups. We proudly support initiatives like the ARA Women in Rail Mentoring Program, which empowers women to excel in a variety of roles and helps foster a more inclusive and diverse industry.
As we look ahead, the company is focused on innovative and creative solutions that will help drive the industry forward.
